    How a rewind is made

    1. Find
One capture per yearThe Internet Archive's Wayback Machine keeps snapshots of homepages going back to the 1990s. For every year we look for the capture that shows what the page was like that year: a launch day, a redesign, a holiday banner.
    2. Check
Every page checked by eyeOld sites redirect, so the archive can serve a page from the wrong year. Some captures are bot walls, error pages or foreign versions. We look at each one before it goes in.
    3. Source
Quotes from the page itselfWe read the full text of every capture: titles, menus, footers, alt text. Anything not on the page links to a source, and claims we couldn't confirm stay out.
